In Professor Layton, when completing a puzzle, you can actually know whether you’re correct or not a moment before Layton or the boy says so. They flash closer to the screen three times, with “Correct” or “Incorrect” appearing the final time, but before that, they’ll either have a little grin or a little frown on their face, so that you know what’s coming.

I played through the entire game twice and never noticed this. My wife played for like ~20 minutes, and it’s one of the first comments she made.

I thought this was the most obvious thing in the world, but then I was playing the game with my girlfriend the other day and I’d comment “yes!” or “nooo!” just before the correct/incorrect came up, and she asked, “how’d you know??”

I guess it’s not common knowledge after all :lol

Maybe this was obvious to everyone but me. The magic word that the main character uses throughout the game is based on the sound made in “Surfin’ Bird”. It only took me a decade to notice this.

Cacildo´s note: The original song to use the “Papa oom mow mow” sound was The Rivingtons – Papa oom mow mow. Ever since it was released the song had a fair share of covers and the Papa oom mow mow was used in quite a few songs, including “Surfin´ Bird” (made popular recently by that annoying Family Guy gag. I hate Family guy…)

Matt Cassamina’s head can be found on Perfect Dark on N64, you can play as him or shoot him.

Even Shiggy himself makes an appearance much like Matt except you can actually find Shiggy in the opening cut-scene to Pelagic II wearing something similar to what Mario would wear.

Cacildo´s note: Matt Cassamassina was IGN nintendo editor since the site was called IGN64. “Shiggy” is short for Shigero Myamoto, a person you obviously know. Perfect Dark used ramdom faces for regular grunts in the game, so it always felt strange, to me, that this particulary cutscene had the same face every time. It was a cameo and i bet most people never noticed it, since Myamoto´s face only became kind of popular in the west after internet exploded in the mid-00s

The song that plays in the options menu of Snk vs Capcom – Millenium Fight 2000 has a sample of a Brazillian Beer TV AD Commercial.

While at the options menu, you can hear somebody say “Kaiser, uma grande cerveja, a cerveja dos momentos felizes” sampled in the middle of the music, meaning “Kaiser, a great beer, the beer of the happy moments” during the music, which was the beer’s cathphrase at the time.

I couldn’t find any good copies of the video online, so i made my own:

I couldn’t find the actual beer commercial anywhere, but you can totally hear it in the background.

I’ve always wondered how the hell that showed up there, but nobody knew back then.

Searching for the video on the web today to post it here, I found that, apparently, that music was made by a Brazillian DJ and that song used to play a lot in a Brazillian Radio Station in Japan. Apparently, it was a very successful song and capcom, somehow, got a hold of a copy and put it in the game. The person that said that went saying that the actual DJ emailed capcom to ask for a explanation and that’s what they gave him. 

I never heard that song before (I live in Brazil) and why did the DJ mail Capcom, instead of suing their asses? That’s a very debatable answer but hey.. at least it makes sense.

Tera thought this deserved a post, from the Chrono Trigger DS thread:

A lot of people like to point out the inconsistency of Marle casting fire on the Chrono Trigger coverart. 99% of people have never realized that the Chrono Trigger coverart is actually the three of them doing the Arc Impulse triple tech (Crono leaps off Frog’s back, Marle’s magic turns Crono’s sword to fire, and he strikes). Completely explains the Crono’s sword being on fire, and why Frog is kneeling on the ground. 2nd tech seen here.

I can’t find an image anywhere of it, but in Final Fantasy 1 there was a tombstone I think in the elf village that read “Here Lies Link”.

Cacildo´s note: “Here lies Link” was inserted in this tombstone only in the “Final Fantasy origins” release, for the PS1 and GBA. The phrase in the original release for the Nes is “Here Lies Erdrick”, and as this guy points out, Erdrick was the hero of the Dragon Warrior series. Here´s a cap

Actually, in the original Japanese Famicom version, it was the grave of Link. Then in the English NES version it was the (misspelled) grave of Erdrick. Most likely having something to do with Nintendo of America being the one to translate and publish both Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior on the NES.

It’s remained Link in Japan through all the other releases of the game, and all of those versions that were brought over were translated faithfully enough to keep that reference intact, even on non-Nintendo systems.

Speaking of Arwings, does everyone know about the Arwing you can fight in OOT with a gameshark? It’s not exactly part of the game, but I didn’t find out about it until a year or two ago

The blog is doing fine. Steady flow of updates, our daily pageview count is pretty low but i wasnt exactly shooting for 100.000 views a day when i decided to create this database…

The tag system on your right isnt exactly what i had in mind when i started the blog, but is the best i can do right now. What i really wanted was a system to automatically add new tags to the list and display a small number next to each tag, showing how many posts this tag have. Unfortunally that´s not possible under WordPress, and i have to manually add each tag to the list (and the system is pretty unstable, so most of the time this process fails and i have to start again)

Anyway, im having fun with the blog, but also having a lot of work to keep the updates coming. Im thinking about adding the google ad system, but since this is not exactly a popular blog, ill probably get less than U$2 a month.
